The earth’s popularity is growing and growing – and so is our mission to make sure our beloved planet earth remains healthy, green and livable. We need to find a balance, to make sure that no matter how big our urban cities grow, there will always be a bit of jungle in it as well! It’s time to embrace nature and create a green environment at home. How? That’s what we’ll tell you in this DIY blog!
A green lifestyle
Wanting to adopt a green lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to go live in a mountain cottage, have your own sheep and cook on an outside fire (though it does sound fun!). Even if you’re used to living the urban life, there are many small things that can make a big difference. For example: take the stairs instead of the elevator on your way to work, set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and wear a big, fluffy sweater instead. Unplug appliances when you’re not using them, hang your freshly washed clothes on a drying rack instead of using the dryer, take shorter showers and add one meatless meal a week. Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. See, that really doesn’t sound that hard! Respecting nature starts with our own culture.
A green home
Plants and flowers come in all shapes, sizes and looks. No urban jungle without its collection of stunning green plants. Each plant has its own quality. The Aloë Vera plant, part of the succulent family, is known for its healing power on sunburns and skin abrasions, while the bark of the banana plant is used to create a strong rope, used in some of our Urban Nature Culture products! Succulents and cacti are a great option if you’re not the best caregiver – they’re drought-tolerant, so they need minimal watering. The same goes for the ever-popular orchid flower. If your home could use a bit of air, try one of these purifying plants and flowers: Peace Lilies, Philodendrons, Photos, Anthuriums and Parlor Palms. All of them purify the air, absorbing different toxins. We suggest you head off to your local plant shop and ask them for advice – each climate calls for different types of plants.
Plant gang styling: show us your green home!
“How lovely, the silence of growing things.”
They’re there to please our eyes, offer us a beautiful, botanic still life, or serve a function; like purifying the air. Plants. We love them. They add that finishing touch to an interior design, bring outdoors indoors and make nature part of our everyday life – no matter how urban we live. This week, Urban Nature Culture has an Urban Jungle theme, and the perfect inspiration for that can be found in ‘plant gang styling’!
So, what exactly is it? It’s actually something we picked up from the urban jungle bloggers, who – once in a while – ask their followers to send them a picture of all their plants, grouped up. Exactly, like a plant gang! So, we’re doing exactly the same. Grab all your flowers, plants and succulents and gather them in your favorite corner at home. Add some Urban Nature Culture must-haves, like the Urban Pot, the Ceramic Plant Hanger, Solstice Standard or the jute Storage Bag. These will all hug your plant gang!
– Make a statement with one big palm tree, olive tree or banana plant.
– Grow your own herbs in the kitchen – right there when you need them.
– Got a bright veranda? Grow your own lemon, apples, pears or oranges. It doesn’t take a massive tree to enjoy fruit from your own garden.
– Want your kids to learn more about nature? Add sticky eyes and mustaches to your plants and let them choose a name – it’s a much more fun way to learn.
Got yourself a beautiful plant gang? Or got an original idea? Upload your picture to Instagram and tag @urban_nature_culture – we’d love to see it!
